there’s been quite the “hubbub” over homeless people being hired to work as mobile hotspots at SXSW. this particular kerfuffle seems to center on the idea that it’s demeaning; that the dignity of the homeless is somehow at stake.
literally nothing says “privilege” like the expectation that dignity comes with any job. if anything, it’s a direct trade: your dignity for a paycheck. i’ve worked damn hard my whole life, and i’m still typing this in a pair of flat-front khakis, and i’m still required to endure the slings and arrows of the lazy, barely literate, and the neopo-tized.
if you’re lucky enough to be employed at a company where no dress code, amenity-leaden offices, and paid week-long “work” vacations to austin, texas are de rigeur, i can understand how you’d think dignity comes with employment. but your resulting guilt-rage on behalf of the homeless sounds a hell of a lot like “let them eat cake.”

You have the option, perhaps not the best right now, but the option to look for other work. The homeless, on the other hand, have next to no options so when their hand forces them to take “jobs” like this, this becomes another issue of privilege.

Except that this job is not a job, it’s a utility. Like hiring homeless people to ride a bike and charge your iphone.
